An Angel Came to Her

In a silent unaware moment of the most heart broken hour, that angel softly spoke. It simply said with love, "I'm ok Mama". That was Brian's care. He saw from Heaven how his mother agonized. Knowing this I can almost sense him pleading with God to let her hear his voice, just one more blessed time. In her very darkest hour, our merciful God let her see light. And that sensation stopped her cold in her aching tracks. I'm sure she could scarcely breathe. She heard her little boy once more.

Somewhere deep within the tormented regions of her shattered soul, Donna heard her son's assurance. It was the morning after the day that he'd been killed. She'd walked a seeming thousand miles through the night. She'd cried a million sobbing tears. Three word's had haunted her no end. My baby's dead. She was a tortured soul indeed.

She'd given birth to that child, held him and nurtured him all his life long. She'd taught him to crawl, walk, talk, and smile. She'd taught him to hold a spoon and hold his heart in his hands to offer all his love. She'd seen him run and play all through childhood running to her arms. She'd seen him pull away as a teen. How many nights she'd lain awake wondering where her son was, if he was safe and when he'd be home. How many times she just wanted him there. She'd tried to call him all day the day that he died. She rang the phone again and again. But he wasn't there to answer.

Suddenly, every parent's most horrific nightmare came true. She was told those terrible words. "I'm sorry Donna, he's dead." The breathtaking, heart stopping  jolt ran through her like electric shock from all the power known. Images of her son flew through her stunned and desperate mind. It couldn't be true, it just could not be true. There had to be a mistake. But there wasn't. The truth was waiting there.

All through the night she had cried. All through the night she agonized. Her child truly was gone, never to come home again. And he'd been lost in such an outrageous way. The thoughts and ideas of those images now stood glaring before her saddened mind's eye. She could scarcely stand it. All night she had pled, God don't let it be true. Please let him drive up. But he never did.

Each time she heard an engine near she would look, hoping very deep down, just let it be him. She finally had no choice but to accept, he would never pull into her drive again. It was all slowly sinking in. Still though, the greatest worry was, had he gone to hell. That thought was really more than she could stand. It was tearing her apart. Thoughts of vivid horror scenes in movies came to mind leading her to think of demons reaching for her child. It was absolute agony. Once the shock began to subside leaving only harsh reality, all she could do was exist, barely functioning, not really aware. She needed sheer relief. She pled with God for a sign, some sort of comfort in knowledge, anything. She needed to know Brian  wasn't in hell. She so needed that peaceful sign.

And then the next day it came. In the silence of the early morning, when no one but she was awake, she walked aimlessly down the hall again. Pictures of her children adorned her family walls. But somehow, she really didn't see. Her thoughts were lost and vague I suppose. Suddenly, so very softly, from where she did not know, she heard those precious words. It wasn't her ears that heard him. It wasn't her mind that heard either. It was her loving mother's heart. God saw the gut wrenching torment she'd endured with no bounds. He knew the darkness she felt for He too had lost a Son for a time. He knew what she needed. And He'd heard her prayers to Him.

For that one moment in time, He allowed that young angel to speak. The voice He gave Brian wasn't audible. It was love. He allowed Brian to smile and say, "I'm ok Mama".

Once again that mother's heartbeat stilled, she stopped abrupt in her empty tread. She had felt her son speak to her.

It could've been the human nature of logic, or it could've been evil trying to take her comfort away, but she consciously shook her head and shed the feeling convincing herself she'd imagined that sensation. But she hadn't imagined it. Brian had been there in some form, some how, through God's giving grace, to ease his mother's mind.

Still though, she could not yet make herself believe and allow that ease of peace to come. She continued to pray, asking for that sign.

The day they buried Brian, the present family went to the funeral. Later they returned to ensure all final touches had been made to be just right for Brian. After lingering there for some time, striving to say the last goodbye, the time arrived for the leave. As she gazed at her son's gravesite with that prayer still being pled, Donna drew a breath and turned to leave the cemetery. The abiding angel who was sent to stay near led that mother's eyes heavenward. Yet again her breath was taken but this time it was with a gentle touch. In the skies she saw a cross. The clouds had spoken for God.

Yes, there was a cross. Directly above the head of Brian's grave, where he lay, the clouds had formed a cross. Had she been the only one to see this loving miracle she might've cast that sign aside too. However everyone there saw it clearly. No greater sign could there be. The angel named Brian had come to his mother. And now he had shown her the truth. He was in Heaven's peace.

Rest now Brian. Rest and know how you are missed. Know that you are cherished. You made an impact here. Heaven's choir probably won't have another singer. But we know that you can hear. And we know you're in the light. We see the stars at night and close our eyes to see you surrounded in light. We love you. Forever faithful....
